Kalima Satori

'Kali Ma' is the Hindu goddess who represents the death of the ego; the ultimate truth. Satori is a Japanese word meaning 'awakening'; specifically to the enlightened state of the buddhas.  The troupe member's backgrounds in Middle Eastern, Ballet, Kabuki, Butoh, Kung Fu, Bharata Natyam, Hoop, Modern, Balinese, Tech, Fire Dance, American Tribal, and good old fashioned Mojave desert throw down creates a rare and beautiful fusion style.  Mixed with electronic beats and deep ritual, Kalima Satori dances to create unity and transformation.

MAKI HATAYAMA

Maki was born and raised in Japan, where she studied traditional Japanese dance from  the age of three.
After moving to LA in 1996, she began to explore Hoop dance and Belly dance.  She is skilled in all manners of fire dance:  hoop, staff, fans, poi, and wands for fire eating & painting.  Her dance is unique and deeply connected to her spirit.

KHANI ZULU

Khani Zulu has been dancing before she could walk.  She would pull herself up to the TV whenever the Wrigleys Spearmint Gum commercials would come on and shake her little tush.  As a child, she took gymnastics, jazz and ballet.  She began teaching at age 14.  This led her to tour the U.S. with the Stars of Tomorrow at age 17.  She attended the University of Texas at Austin as a Modern dance major where she received her BFA and performed with Jose Bustamante and Yakov Sharir of the Sharir Dance Company, Lori Wilson of Tallulah Dance Company, and Andrea Ariel of Ariel Dance Theatre.  Khani also directed her own company, Utopia, from 1993 to 1998 in Austin,TX. 

Khani found the world of bellydance a few years ago. Inspired and empowered by so many women of all shapes and sizes, she is excited to be a part of such a positive and supportive dance community

MONILADE WALKER

Monilade Walker received her BFA in Dance in 2006 from Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, WA.  Modern and Butoh Dance are her languages of self expression and choreography is her canvas to share with the world. Monilade has danced with many artists including Wade Madsen, Maureen Whiting, Amy O'Neil, Vania Bynum, Pilar Villanueva and Dream Circus Theatre. Her latest work was shown at On the Boards in Seattle, WA.  Recently returning to Los Angeles, Monilade is continuing to produce her own works as well as dancing with Kalima Satori.

SHAJARA

Shajara studied Bharata Natyam in California for 8 years with Guru Malathi Iyengar, disciple of the late Guru Narmada.  She has studied Bharata Natyam with Sudharsana Srinivasan in NY, Sridevi Ajai Thirumalai in MA and Indian folk from Murali Mohan.  Her training in Modern and Middle Eastern dance along with experience and exposure to Hip Hop and African has influenced her recent choreography of diverse Liturgical and World Fusion dances.  Shajara has performed with Rangoli Dance Company (Bharata Natyam), Kahana Hula (Polynesian) and Sisters of the Red Skye (middle-eastern/world dance) troupes.
